While Crying Hill comprises the entire northern ridge hillside of the original Mandan townsite, most of this has been extensively developed. Patrick Atkinson's goal is to preserve as much as possible of the remaining section of Crying Hill as possible as a Heritage Site.
To visit Crying Hill® in Mandan, North Dakota, go to the east end of town and take Mandan Avenue to the base of the hill. You will see the large letters spelling out the city's name, MANDAN, along the side of the hillside. Only the portion of the land that is enclosed within the split cedar log fence is owned by Patrick Atkinson. This land is accessible to the public through the provisions of North Dakota's free range recreational laws. This is a sacred area: no vehicles, firearms, alcohol, fires, illegal acts, or overnight camping permitted.
